Alphabet Nouns and gender Grammatical number

There are two grammatical genders: male and female.

The following is a rule (but there are many exceptions from this rule):

  • a noun ending with ה or ת is feminine;
  • the rest of the nouns are masculine;

Names of cities and countries are feminine.

Some examples of nouns

עוף - a bird (masculine).

מיץ - squeezing, pressing, wringing (masculine), an abstract concept.

יבשה - dry ground (ends with ה and is feminine, as usual for words with this last letter).

ארץ - country, earth (female despite does not end with ה or ת); with definite article (see below) means "Earth".

עדן - Eden (feminine as any geographical name).
