1. It is unlikely that light (electromagnetic waves) did not exist before [[Tanakh:Genesis 1:3|Genesis 1:3]]. After all electromagnetic forces keep atoms of the Earth from gravitational collapsing.
So it is fit this explanation: The surface of the Earth was dark accordingly according to [[Exegesis:Genesis 1:2|Genesis 1:2]]. And saying "light appeared" means that it became lighter on the surface of the Earth.
2. Christ calls himself "light of the World": (Jn. 8:12) “... Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world...”” and (Jn. 9:5) “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
