1. It is unlikely that light (electromagnetic waves) did not exist before [[Tanakh:Genesis 1:3|Genesis 1:3]]. After all electromagnetic forces keep atoms of the Earth from gravitational collapsing.
So it is fit this explanation: The Earth was dark accordingly [[Exegesis:Genesis 1:2|Genesis 1:2]]. And saying "light appeared" means that it became lighter on the surface of the Earth.
