(AKJV) ... for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt

Why God uses this word "peradventure"? Is God unsure what may happen? Or does it make sense to ask at all what would surely happen under an unreal condition (because quantum mechanics makes it uncertain)? (This seems to be the answer.)
